The French market is huge and it's moving in a specific direction. In 2025, 5.3 million coffee machines were sold in France according to GIFAM and NielsenIQ-GfK, cited by Places du Café (data published on 12 February 2026): manual portafilter espresso machines jumped 53% by volume year on year, to 660,000 units, while automatic bean to cup machines slipped 6%.

Hold on to the commercial consequence rather than the figure. Manufacturers defend their volume from the bottom of the catalogue, so the entry level is well stocked and heavily discounted. What isn't well stocked is the material.

One clarification that matters before we go further: the Ninja is not an automatic bean to cup machine. It's a portafilter with a built-in grinder, a different object, with a different learning curve. I'll come back to it below.

This is the most interesting slice of the French market, and the one where "which bean to cup machine under €300" has a real answer. Four machines fit here, and all four are different. The only genuine twin pair in this article straddles two price tiers: the Krups Essential Compacte button version sits here, and its LCD-screen sibling sits in the next tier.

Philips Series 2200: the best value of the selection

€262.99 on 8 August 2026, 4.2 / 5 from 26,598 ratings. That's by far the widest ratings sample of the six, which tells you nothing about what's in the cup and quite a lot about perceived reliability at scale.

The deciding point here is the grinder: 100% ceramic burrs. According to Que Choisir, France's consumer body, ceramic burrs run more quietly and wear differently from steel, but cost more and can crack if a foreign object gets through the beans. At €262.99, having ceramic is a genuine line in the ledger.

The rest is deliberately poor: two drinks, and a manual panarello-type frother you have to learn to hold. If you drink two or three lattes a day, this model is going to annoy you.

De'Longhi Magnifica S Perfetto: 13 grind settings

€287.99 on 8 August 2026, 4.1 / 5 from 7,587 ratings. The lowest rating of the six, and that's a data point not to wave away.

What the Magnifica S brings that the Philips doesn't: a steel burr grinder with 13 grind positions. Thirteen notches isn't barista-grade adjustment, but it's enough to rescue a bean that's roasted too dark or a roast that runs through too fast.

Watch out for the name confusion, which keeps turning up in French comparison articles: the Magnifica Start (ECAM 220.21.B) is a different model, the one quoted in a comparison published in May 2026 by Coffee Webstore. Check the model number, not the marketing name.

Krups Essential Compacte: the €50 question

€299.99 on 8 August 2026 for the button version, 4.2 / 5 from 5,702 ratings. Its argument is physical: 24.5 × 33 × 36.5 cm, with a 1.7 L tank. It's the narrowest of the lot, and on a Paris worktop, width sometimes decides before the grinder does.

Manual steam wand here too. Krups doesn't state the burr material on this listing, so I'm not going to invent it.

There's a second version of the same machine, with an LCD screen, at €349.99. That isn't a second model to compare, it's a single decision: €50 for a screen and two saved recipes. I'm covering it in the next tier, since that's where its price puts it.

Krups Harmony: 4.6 / 5, but from only 151 ratings

€299.99 on 8 August 2026, four drinks, and a 4.6 / 5 rating that's the best of the six. Except it rests on 151 ratings, against 26,598 for the Philips.

That's not a criticism of the machine, it's a warning about method. An average built on 151 reports hasn't yet met the eighteen-month breakdown, which is exactly the moment a cheap bean to cup coffee machine gets judged.

Here's the part most comparison articles skate over. Between €300 and €500, on an automatic machine, the premium almost never turns into parts. It turns into interface.

Krups Essential Compacte, LCD version: €349.99

€349.99 on 8 August 2026, 4.3 / 5 from 4,441 ratings. Same chassis, same 24.5 × 33 × 36.5 cm, same 1.7 L tank, same manual steam wand as the €299.99 version.

The €50 gap buys the LCD screen and two saved recipes. The rating is very slightly better (4.3 against 4.2 on 8 August 2026), on a smaller sample. Nothing in the water circuit, nothing in the brew group, nothing in the grinder.

My opinion, and it is an opinion: if you always make the same coffee, keep the €50 and spend it on beans from a roaster.

Krups Essential Compacte - Interface LCD

Ninja Luxe Premier ES601EU: a portafilter, not an automatic

€399.00 on 8 August 2026, 4.2 / 5 from 636 ratings, and probably the most interesting object on the list, as long as you know what it is.

The ES601EU is a portafilter espresso machine (Siebträger) with a built-in grinder, plus a cold brew function and a filter coffee function. You dose, you tamp, you lock it in. It's the only model in the selection that lets you drive the extraction, with 25 grind settings quoted by the manufacturer and an automatic frother.

The downside is blunt. Buy it on the strength of the word "grinder" while shopping for an automatic, and you'll be disappointed on the first rushed morning.

Ninja Luxe Premier ES601EU - Machine à Café Grain 3en1 avec Infusion à Froid

The starting point is counter-intuitive, and it comes from a source that genuinely tests. In its own comparison, Que Choisir finds that the cheapest models do as well as the top of the range on a basic coffee. Put another way: the plain espresso, you already have it at €262.99.

What you don't have splits into five items.

The brew group. Under €500 it's engineering plastic. Above, it goes partly brass, a material that holds temperature better between two cups. Second question, more important still: is it removable? A removable group gets rinsed under the tap every week. A sealed group depends on an automatic cycle, and on a technician the day it jams.

The burrs. Neither steel nor ceramic wins, and presenting this as a ranking is the most common mistake in this market. Que Choisir describes a trade-off: steel is tougher and cheaper to produce but wears over time, ceramic is quieter and resists wear differently, costs more, and cracks if a stone gets into the hopper.

Temperature control. None of the six advertises a PID controller. A PID holds temperature to better than ±1 °C, where a classic thermostat drifts by several degrees between the first coffee and the third. On a single espresso, nobody notices. On four cups back to back on a Sunday morning, you do.

Milk. Manual panarello everywhere, except on the Ninja. An automatic carafe froths and pours the milk on its own; a manual wand asks for a technique you pick up in a week and lose in three.

Repair. Two French facts to know before you pay. The garantie légale de conformité, France's statutory conformity guarantee, applies automatically and free of charge for 2 years, with nothing to buy at the till, a right UFC-Que Choisir has documented since it was extended in 2016. And unlike dishwashers or vacuum cleaners, coffee machines fall into none of the five categories covered by France's mandatory indice de réparabilité, the repairability index, according to the ministry for ecological transition. So no official score will help you compare these six machines. That leaves you two concrete clues: is the brew group removable, and does the brand sell spare parts separately.

Boxes in this price band advertise 15 bar, sometimes 19. It's the most heavily promoted number on the shelf, and the least useful.

As Que Choisir's buying guide points out, the advertised pressure isn't the extraction pressure: an espresso is pulled at around 9 bar, the pressure that "allows the aromas and flavours of the coffee to be extracted best". The number printed on the carton describes the peak the pump can reach, not the working pressure at the puck.

Between two cheap bean to cup coffee machines, then, the gap in advertised bar teaches you nothing. The grind, the dose and the freshness of the beans decide the cup.

The threshold is sharp, and it sits only a little above this article's ceiling, about thirty euros as of 8 August 2026 going by the two examples below, not the hundred you might picture. Two machines show it, both left out here for one reason, the price.

The Philips Series 5500 (EP5546/70) showed €529.00 on 8 August 2026, with 4.3 / 5 from 13,834 ratings. The De'Longhi Rivelia (EXAM440.35.B) showed €525.00 the same day, with 4.3 / 5 from 376 ratings. Twenty-five to thirty euros over the line, and the object changes nature: a self-cleaning automatic milk carafe, a full control screen, distinctly wider grind adjustment.

So here's the rule, said plainly. If you drink black espresso or lungo, stay under €300 and ignore everyone. If milk is your daily habit, a €500 budget is the worst possible place to be: too expensive for the honest entry level, too tight for an automatic milk system. Wait until you have €550, to keep a safety margin above that threshold.

Under €500, it's almost never the grinder that goes first. It's limescale.

Water hardness varies sharply from one French region to another: 5 to 15 °f (French hardness degrees) in Brittany against 30 to 50 °f in the Hauts-de-France, and above 25 °f, the service life of a household appliance can fall by 30% to 50% according to Adoucisseur-eau.fr (page dated 8 June 2026). That figure comes from a water-softener retailer, not a public agency, so treat it as an order of magnitude.

The order of magnitude is enough to decide. In Lille, a €262.99 machine descaled twice a year will outlast a €480 machine forgotten in a corner. Your French water bill carries the exact value in degrés français.

Two pieces of data are deliberately missing from the table, the Krups burr material and the Harmony's milk system: they aren't stated on the listings consulted, so they stay as "not stated" rather than becoming an estimate.

Black espresso, tight budget, one or two cups a day: Philips Series 2200 at €262.99. The ceramic grinder and the 26,598 ratings do the rest.
