International Coffee Day 2026: the UN made it official, here's what that changes

The ICO did, and the decision goes back to March 2014, when its member states agreed to put one coffee day on 1 October, as the ICO's own page notes. The first official edition opened in Milan on 1 October 2015, during the world expo, as Comunicaffe announced at the time.

Resolution A/RES/80/248 designates 1 October as International Coffee Day (UN observance page). It passed by 150 votes to one with one abstention: the United States voted no, Canada abstained, according to Comunicaffe (11 March 2026).

The file came from the FAO, whose Conference adopted resolution 6/2025 on 4 July 2025, before Brazil tabled draft A/80/L.44, dated 9 February 2026. France, Germany and Italy are among its sponsors.

The shorter list is what it leaves alone. No public holiday. No law. No budget of its own: draft A/80/L.44 says costs should be met through voluntary contributions, private ones included (paragraph 4). And no new coffee fund either, which Daily Coffee News (11 March 2026) spells out.

Status is the part that moves. The FAO is invited to run the observance alongside the ICO, and member states to mark it with awareness work. A development question sits behind that: coffee supports close to 25 million farmers and brings in more than $200 billion a year, per the FAO (10 March 2026). US National Coffee Day lands on 29 September, in the United States only (Awareness Days). Turkish Coffee Day sits on 5 December; Türkiye marked it on 5 December 2025, Anadolu reported. One loose end: as of 19 September 2026 the ICO had published no theme for the 2026 edition on its own coffee day page.
