Pressurized Basket or Not: What Changes on Your Espresso Machine

Pressurized Basket or Not: What Changes on Your Espresso Machine

Thick brown foam in the cup, even with coffee ground three weeks ago? On an entry-level machine, the pressurized basket that came in the box has a lot to do with it, and your grind far less. It forgives your mistakes. It also hides them.

The basket is the perforated cup that sits inside the portafilter. It's the basket that's pressurized, not the portafilter.

1

Is your basket pressurized? The 10-second test

To tell if a basket is pressurized, flip it over. One small hole in the middle of the base: it's pressurized. Fine holes across the whole surface: it isn't. A Coffee Spirit tutorial from French retailer Maxicoffee describes the same split: many holes on the inside, just one on the outside.

2

Why the crema from a pressurized basket is fake

Breville (the maker behind Sage) explains that the outer wall's single small hole creates back pressure, so the basket soaks up uneven tamping or the wrong grind size. It suggests this basket for beginners, which makes sense.

The catch, as Kaffeemacher puts it: the pressure drop lets dissolved CO2 escape, "creating foam rather than true crema". A good-looking cup proves nothing about the extraction.

Whole Latte Love calls these baskets training wheels, to drop once the basics are in place.

3

When should you switch to a non-pressurized basket?

Not before you have a burr grinder that goes fine enough and adjusts in small steps. Coffee Spirit compares the right grind to icing sugar, and Whole Latte Love spells out the margin: too coarse and the shot lacks depth, too fine and it turns bitter.

For actual numbers, see our espresso grind size setting guide. If manual machines are new to you, the manual espresso machine beginner's guide covers the basics.

A quick aside: a bottomless portafilter is of little use before that switch, since there's nothing to see under a pressurized basket.

4

Which basket diameter fits your machine?

Check the box first, then measure the inside diameter of your basket, because sizes vary from model to model.

58 mm: Gaggia Classic Pro

Whole Latte Love lists the Gaggia Classic Pro with a 58 mm portafilter and baskets of both types. The IMS Big Bang is a precision single-wall basket for 58 mm machines. Diameters and doses here are maker or retailer figures, not independently verified.

54 mm: Sage Bambino Plus and Barista Express

Breville's pages for the Barista Express and the Bambino Plus list both single-wall and dual-wall baskets at 54 mm. Those are US store pages, so check what ships with your local Sage version.

51 mm: De'Longhi Dedica

The Dedica's pressurized filter measures 51 mm. According to the Amazon.fr listing (checked on 10 October 2026), the IMS Precision Convex 51 mm fits the bottomless portafilters of the Dedica and the La Specialista range. The original Dedica portafilter works only if its plastic bottom is removed; the original La Specialista one doesn't.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a pressurized basket bad for coffee?

No, manufacturers include it on purpose. Breville does note that it may give a less full-bodied cup than a non-pressurized basket. You gain forgiveness and lose control over taste. With a decent grinder, a single-wall basket becomes the more interesting option.

Is a non-pressurized basket compatible with the Sage Barista Express?

Yes, at 54 mm, and only the basket changes, not the portafilter. According to Breville's pages, a single-wall basket already comes alongside the dual-wall one, so you may own it. A basket of another diameter won't fit this machine.

What grind do you need for a non-pressurized basket?

A fine and fresh one: Coffee Spirit ties real crema to a single-wall basket and freshly ground coffee, while a pressurized basket tolerates a coarser grind. The usual approach is to move the grinder in small steps, one change at a time, tasting after each shot.

How do you switch from a pressurized to a non-pressurized basket?

You'll want to weigh the dose to suit the basket (Breville lists 18 g on its Barista Express and Bambino Plus pages), grind noticeably finer than before and tamp level. Expect a few failed shots early on: without the pressurized wall, nothing covers for your grind or your tamp.
